The Story of 'Mr. Den', the Visionary Behind Two Iconic Cultivars
In the world of Platycerium, where beauty is defined by subtle textures, shapes, and genetic mystery, a name has quietly emerged as one of Indonesia’s most respected growers and cultivar creators — Mr. Den.
He is the originator of two remarkable forms that have captivated collectors worldwide: Platycerium veitchii WAR and Platycerium veitchii Wild Bangli.
A Passion Rooted in Curiosity
Mr. Den began his Platycerium journey in 2020, exploring the wonders of various species and forms — from andinum, hillii wide, superboom special, wallichii, holttumii, cabbage, ridleyii wide, to madagascariense.
Through years of dedication and observation, he discovered that every species has its own story, yet the veitchii line drew his deepest fascination. It was this passion that led to his most celebrated discoveries.
The Birth of veitchii WAR
Many collectors today recognize the name “WAR”, yet few truly understand its origin.
Contrary to popular belief, Platycerium veitchii WAR is not a cross between veitchii Wild and veitchii Auburn River.
In truth, WAR is a pure veitchii Auburn River sporeling, carefully selected and propagated by Mr. Den.
This distinction is important — while others assumed it was a cultivar, the reality is that WAR’s beauty lies in its purity.
Through meticulous selection, he identified a form of Auburn River that displayed exceptionally strong character — perhaps even surpassing the standard Auburn River forms that came before it.
From that one outstanding specimen, WAR was born.
The Rise of veitchii Wild Bangli
Among all his works, Platycerium veitchii Wild Bangli holds a special place.
Using name to the Bangli region of Bali, this form captured the attention of collectors for its diverse and unpredictable characteristics.
While Auburn River has long been admired for its sculpted shield and dense frond texture, the Wild Bangli line can display even greater variation — producing forms so unique that many now consider it one of the most fascinating veitchii lines ever found.
Over time, the Wild Bangli line spread beyond Indonesia, finding new homes in Japan, Thailand, and other parts of the world.
As these plants matured, many growers began relabeling their offspring with different names — a reflection of how many distinct and beautiful results emerged from Mr. Den’s original spores.
Beyond WAR — A Vision That Continues
Even after achieving international recognition, Mr. Den has not stopped exploring.
He is currently developing new lines, including Platycerium veitchii Schilling, and several other projects still in progress.
He admits that the sporeling process remains a challenge: predicting outcomes is nearly impossible, especially when young plants appear so similar.
Patience, therefore, becomes the key — he releases new plants only when their true character begins to reveal itself.
On Misunderstandings and Integrity
When asked about the ongoing confusion surrounding the WAR label — with some sellers marketing it as veitchii Wild × AR — Mr. Den responds calmly.
“For me, it’s not a big problem,” he says. “But in the end, buyers might feel disappointed once they realize the difference in character.”
His words reflect the humility of a grower who values authenticity over popularity — someone who lets his work speak for itself.
A Legacy in the Making
Through careful observation, patience, and dedication, Mr. Den has given the Platycerium world two living masterpieces.
Veitchii WAR stands as a testament to the purity and strength of the Auburn River line, while Veitchii Wild Bangli celebrates nature’s diversity and unpredictability.
Together, they represent more than just plants — they are milestones in the art and science of Platycerium cultivation.
And for Mr. Den, this is just the beginning.
